I really enjoyed your post - brought back a lot of memories. I flew in the early seventies without INS and rember grid very well. Going from Alaska to Norway using a funny looking map then flying the approach where the mag compass said east but the gyro ( controlled by the nav ) said south. All the Navs had to log a grid leg every month and usually did so between Hawaii and Guam. Flying a heading of 125 d was weird.
For anyone intrested in the subject there are two books that I recommend. The first is " Polar Air Navigation - A Record " By Greenaway and Gates. The other is two volumns " Nadir to Zenith " by Hockney and Gates. It is a collection of stories by Canadian Military Navigators.
Just remember, there IS life after flying. I have been retired ten years ( forced out at 60 )
