I'm going to start posting celestial navigation puzles. One a day if there's enough interest.
Each puzzle will END at a place with a connection to the history of the United States.
Your job: work out the fix and figure out the destination and its connection with history.
April 25, 2026:
You're sailing southwest (225 degrees true, checked by Polaris) at 5 knots before dawn. Height of sextant is 12 feet. Sextant has an index error of 2' OFF the arc (corr. +2').
At 3:05 GMT you shoot Polaris and record 32 50. Latitude??
Two hourrs later at 05:01:30 GMT, you shoot the Sun LL. The Sun is towards the stern, port side. The sextant reads 14 24. Running fix??
You continue sailing, same course and speed and ARRIVE IN HISTORY. Where are you? When do you land? And what's the connection to US history?
Josh
