Darnah Libya... The "Shores of Tripoli". Yeah, I bet that's it. Nice work, Patrick Twohy!
My turn......
I wanted to get a first guess at the location by looking in Stellarium.
First I set the latitude to 33° since that was roughly the altitude of Polaris. Not exact OF COURSE but this is a first guess. Then I set the date to April 25 (2026), and I set the time to 05:01:30 UT (same as GMT??). In my home longitude 90 W, where I started, this was the middle of the night, so no good. I flipped to the "Location" selection box in Stellarium... clicked on the longitude box... and then held down the UP ARROW key on the keyboard until the Sun rose. That happened at longitude 5° E. Now I'm close, but on land in northern Algeria (I think)... I tapped the UP key a few more times until the Sun "Alt." reached 14.5°. That happened at longitude 23° E. I believe that location 33°N and 23°E has to be within a degree or two of the correct position at 0501.
Patrick Twohy, can you tell me how you proceeded to get the exactt position? Did you use an app or tables or something in between?
Josh, this was a FUN PUZZLE! Great idea. I like the idea of doing some American history related puzzles since this week is the 250yr anniversary of 1776. Maybe you could also throw in some British history since July is also the 250th anniversary of the beginning of the voyage of "Resolution"... James Cook on his way to his doom.
Again Josh, this was great. Thanks for posting this!
