Polaris for Latitude- why so accurate?

I've taken several Polaris shots using an AH and made the reduction to determine Latitude using the method mentioned in Bowditch.
The results of the reduction compared to a GPS fix are extremely close with a range- between 18 seconds to 1 minute difference.
Are Polaris shots for Latitude inherently accurate? It's understood that alot depends upon many factors but my work of only around 200 celestial sights and reductions it concerns me that I'm doing....something right.
Any ideas or opinions?
