Sputnik 1 was launched on Friday October 4th. The following Monday, Gueir and Weiffenbach tracked it by measuring the Doppler shift. On March 17th, 1958, their boss Frank McClure asked if they could trurn this into a Navsat. The result was Transit. That coincidentally was ther day my father's Vanguard 1 satellite was launched. I exchanged several emails with Bill Guier in 2008 when I was researching GPS Declassified.
Here are clips from the Vanguard 1 50th in 2008 where Marty Votaw talks about the response to Sputnik 1. Sputnik transmitted at 20 and 40 MHz whereas Minitrack was designed to detect the IGY specified 108 MHz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS72o86aeZo&t=3s. I recently talked about this. https://player.fm/series/space-and-things/stp133-unsung-heroes-roger-easton-the-man-behind-vanguard-1-and-gps-with-richard-easton
