This morning I saw an excellent rainbow. It was bright and a complete semicircle. It occurred to me that if I calculated the position of the of the sun and measured altitude of the top of the arch with a bubble sextant I could use the physics of rainbows to determine my position.
Then I had doubts. I looked up the wikipedia article on rainbows and became thoroughly confused.
Can a circle of position, or even a position, be determined from observation of a rainbow?
