Tom, I can understand your reasoning given the angle of the lop change. However my personal moon shots have often not been all that accurate. Perhaps due to the moon's speed or corrections applied. But I can see your point.
As for the premise of the original question. Yes one can and many have obtained such fixes over a period of time. I did this myself in Texas over a 6 hour period. I used moon, sun stars etc for a fix. No need to advance lops.
