This is definitely along the lines of my thinking as well. Another fun project that we could perhaps spearhead: get somebody to reprint the original 1802 Bowditch in time for its 200th anniversary next year, and the Peabody Essex Museum would be the perfect partner in this endeavor. Given that I'm in the Boston area, Salem appeals greatly. A couple of years ago we had a gathering of the SEAROOM-L and GUNROOM lists (which focus on nautical fiction, especially the Aubry/Maturin novels of Patrick O'Brien). We turned it into a fundraiser for the USS CONSTITUTION, which at that time was passing the hat to buy sails. Maybe we could do something similar revolving around the Peabody Essex Museum, which has a fine collection of old navigation instruments? -- Peter Smith Dover, Massachusetts 42d 13'N 71d 17'W
