Robin, thanks for posting this, this is very interesting! And the dots at the 30' marks for the MHR scale- wonderful ;o) I still have plenty tubes for cylindrical slide rules, matching the original MHR dimensions, in fibre reinforced plastic. In all there are 3 tubes (cotan scale, cos, and cursor) plus a slightly thicker stub to be the handle. I can machine the 20 groves, these indeed give good grip. I use my working copy and it works a charm. No lookups but the almanac data! 3D printing might be nice, but is not really necessary to come very close to the original. My simplified multi-cam locking mechanism works even when quickly hand-cut with a jigsaw... The whole thing is very light weight and waterproof. I also made it a protective case from 3" drainpipe. see my earlier posts or contact me directly if you are interested in more detail. For me, making the scales to measure was the hard bit.
