Dear all,
in addition to Frank's comment I was reminded of a notice by D.H.Sadler - former Superintendent of the Nautical Almanac Office - in his article "Lunar Methods For 'Longitude Without Time" (Journal of Navigation, Vol. 31, 2 (1978), 244 - 249):
“At the meeting of 'The Commissioners appointed by Acts of Parliament for the discovery of Longitude at Sea' held at the Admiralty on Saturday, 5 June 1802, it was 'Resolved Unanimously that this Board will not in future take into their consideration any methods of ascertaining the Longitude founded on the Moon's Altitude, or on the Polarity of the Magnetic Needle, and that Mr. Gilpin, the Secretary, be directed to give this answer to all persons who shall in future send projects for discovering the Longitude founded on either of these principles.'"
Regards
Wolfgang
