HO 249 volume 1 is NOT available for free from the government website. The link provided here is for the commercial edition which has a completely recomputed epoch 2015 edition, the last government edition was for epoch 2010 star positions. The free download is courtesy of the owner of Celestaire, Ken Gehart, who is a member, and frequent poster, here on Navlist. The commercial edition is also available for purchase at Celestaire which is the best place to obtain all of your navigation equipment needs. For some clear explanations of rhe celestial navigation process see these posts from Ken.

I purchased my first bubble sextant from Celestaire way back in 1977 and other things in the subsequent years. I have met Ken, once at his store in Kansas and in 2008 at the Navlist get together in Mystic, he's a good guy.
We should support Celestaire so that we will continue to have a source of high quality navigation gear.
