    Paul
As promised here is a pre-computed five shot two-star sandwich fix form for a Vulcan at 22:00 UT tonight and completed in time too!  I had to use an unofficial copy of 2025 Epoch HO249.  I couldn’t find my official copy on my PC.  Hc Alpheratz doesn’t quite tie in with my cross check against Navigator, but perhaps the Epoch is different.  I’ve left P&N as zero, because my unofficial HO249 didn’t have that table.  Note that on this form you change the sign of most of the corrections, because you’re pre-computing.  Note also that Corioli’s correction and P&N can also be taken care of by moving the assumed position.  Note also that the Vulcan had to have two sextant mountings, port and starboard, because our caring Government provided a multi seat life raft right behind the pilots.  This meant you could set up for two stars in advance and just jump across the cabin from sextant to sextant, which saved a lot of time.  I’ve also added a set of imaginary shots, but I had to make my acceleration errors average out to zero, because I’ve mislaid my Mears Slide for my Dalton Computer.  You can do it mathematically, but I keep having to re-work out the formula.  I’ve one correction.  In my previous post, I said you needed two assumed positions for a two-star sandwich switch.  I was certain we only used one, but I couldn’t remember why.  I realised once I started filling in the form.  You enter AP3270/HO249 Vol3 with Latitude and LHA Aries only.  You don’t need to worry about SHAs, Vol3 takes care of that for you, so yes, you only need one assumed position for a sandwich fix.  DaveP

    What is NavList?

NavList is a community devoted to the preservation and practice of celestial navigation and other methods of traditional position-finding. We're a group of navigators, navigation enthusiasts and hobbyists, mathematicians and physicists, and historians interested in all aspects of navigation but primarily those techniques which are non-electronic.

To post a message, if you are already signed up as a NavList member, start a new discussion or reply to any posted message and use your posting code (this is a simple low-security password assigned when you join). You may also join by posting. Your first on-topic messsage automatically makes you a member, and a posting code will be assigned and emailed to you for future posts.

Uniquely, the NavList message boards also permit full interaction entirely by email. You can optionally receive individual posts or daily digests by email, and any member can post messages by email (bypassing the web site) by sending to our posting address which is "NavList@NavList.net". This functionality is similar to a traditional Internet mailing list: post by email, read by email, reply by email. Most members will prefer the web interface here for posting and replying to messages.

NavList is more than an online community... more about that another day.
