    Primary Celestial Navigation Kit

    Since we have been discussing celestial backups to EMP damaged electronics, it is only fitting to continue the discussion on what kit is preferred by navigators that choose to use celestial navigation as their primary means of positioning.

    Minimum CN kit aboard the ketch S/V Nightcap:

    1. Cassens & Plath and Tamaya Jupiter (favorite) sextants with 4x40mm scope and sight tube contained in aftermarket waterproof sextant boxes.

    2. Palm Centro (favorite) smart phone loaded with Pilot Navigator Software version 6.9 (contains NA data), TI 36X Pro solar trig calculator, and Tamaya NC-77.

    3. Citizen Eco-Drive analog (favorite) and Casio digital quartz watches.

    4. Ultrak 440 digital stopwatch.

    5. Grundig S350 shortwave. 

    6. Plotting sheets.

    7. Pair of protractor triangles, course plotter,  dividers/compass dividers, 0.5/0.7mm mechanical pencil, Mars eraser.

    8. Pilot/great circle/general/coastal/harbor paper charts covering departure and all expected destinations.

    9. 2102-D star finder.

    10. Morin 2000 hand bearing compass.

    11. Nautical Almanac.

    12. 7x50mm Pentax marine binoculars(favorite) and 7x50mm Swift marine binoculars.

    CN backup - 8 day aircraft clock, mechanical stop watch, Pub 249 vols., Bowditch vol. 2 with trig log and haversine tables, US Navy Bendix MK 5 octant with natural and bubble horizon.
