Microsoft's *free* Visual Studio Express packages are worth a look if you're interested in programming. These are simplified versions of the Visual Studio development environments for Basic, C++, C#, and J#. Last week I downloaded Visual C++ Express. My dial up connection needed a few hours to transfer the 91 MB, but I ran it when I didn't need Internet access, so there was no serious inconvenience. The download link put a 2 MB installation program on my computer and left an icon on my desktop. Double clicking the icon initiated the main download. There was no indication that suspending the download was possible, but I found that clicking CANCEL had that effect. I actually did the download in two separate sessions. Launching the installation program a second time caused it to resume where it had been interrupted. It did appear to be repeating some file setup steps, but that took only a little time. Maybe that wouldn't have occurred if I'd shut off the Internet connection instead of clicking the cancel button. The installation went perfectly, though registering the product was a hassle -- I had to create an account on Microsoft's Passport service. The app itself looks good, though. It appears to have ample power for anything I would do. For the past couple years I've been using a Windows port of the GNU GCC compiler, but from now on I'll probably use VC++ Express unless my project requires Fortran. http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/default.aspx -- I block messages that contain attachments or HTML. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To post to this group, send email to NavList@fer3.com To , send email to NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
