For Stan's conditions:
The 1947 preliminary 249 picks 6 not 7. It chose,dubhe,pollux, betegeux, aldebaran, alphertaz, and deneb.
My algorithm pick7 selects 6 of the HO249, but misses one. Looking at a plot of altitudes and azimuths (attached), I can't understand.
