I've reduced many sights with the Ageton method on a blank sheet of paper without referring to any instructions. It is not difficult if you stay in practice. I think any expert celestial navigator should be able to do that (including all the corrections) with his favorite reduction method. The steps should all be so familiar they can be performed by heart without the prompting of a form. (But a form reduces the chance of a mistake.) --
