    Gary,
    If the aircraft is rather old (747-200 and a few others still flying
    oceanic routes) they may not be equipped with CPDLC and so satellite
    position reporting can not be done.  In the older aircraft it is still
    done via HF and SELCAL.
    
    As to the 777-200, I suspect it has CPDLC and more than likely Automatic
    Dependent Surveillance version ADS-B or ADS-C.
