Hello Frank,
I was taught Astro navigation at sea by our ship's Navigator as I had an interest in it. He taught me the tables and how to plot it on a plotting sheet. He would have given me an Ocean Astro ticket except our final passage from Hormuz ( yes that one, in an earlier blockade, LOL ) to Sydney was cloudy the entire passage. Not ONE sight. Amazing. Bloody annoying too.
Years later I bought a 1943 Hezzanith sextant. It had a vernier scale. I worked it out but it took a little while. The book I bought was Celestial Navigation by Jeff Toghill. He is an Australian and has a few navigation books . He explains the whole process in the simplest and practical way to get the job done.
You mention that an explanation of the vernier and side error are pointless, could you expand on that? I get completely lost on some of the things here... but I try to keep up!
cheers Roger
