A friend is a watch/clock collector and had a tall case pendulum clock. The clock had a temperature correcting device in the pendulum which contained a pool of mercury, which apparently adjusted the pendulum length. For safety reasons, my friend replaced the mercury with birdshot.
The clock supposedly resided in a bank lobby near a train station, and was used as a reference by train conductors. My friend also believed that the pocket watch carried by the conductors could not be reset in the field to avoid the possibility of an erroneous setting or accidental change.
