As for being able to see the drum:  I have a red-LED light on a headband similar to this one  http://www.amazon.ca/Eveready-LED-Headlamp-Red-Black/dp/B00IEVK9US  The lights sit flat against your head, of course, but mine is hinged and can also flip down 90°.  I take a sight, flip my headlamp down, and get quite a bit of light on the index drum, and also on my notebook for writing down the data.  If I leave the headlamp hinged down for my next shot, I get all sorts of reflections in my sextant telescope.  So I flip it up and I am ready for my next sight.

    >>I have found that the best way, at least for me, to take a series of sights is to hold my phone in my left hand with the recorder app running in the background and displaying the UTC app. <<

This is a great usability tidbit, Dale.  Thanks!  I'll try it out in the next couple of days.

    Bob
