When Alexander Mackenzie met Philip Turnor at Cumberland House, upon returning from his 1790 trip to the mouth of the Mackenzie River, Turnor (a surveyor and land navigator of exceptional skills) remarked, Mr McKensie says he has been at the Sea, but thinks it the Hyperborean Sea but he does not seem acquainted with Observations which makes me think he is not well convinced where he has been. One can imagine that Turnor was implying that he, at least, knew where the oceans were, and where he was, and if he met an ocean, he would certainly know which one it was. The meeting convinced Mackenzie to return to England for a year to learn celestial navigation before his trip across the continent in 1793.
