Bob,
This was in the pre- radar days, and specifically in the Merchant Marine. You were expected to familiarize yourself with the projected route and charted characteristics before going on watch and to call thr "old man" if you had to leave the bridge - keeping a lookout and preserving night vision were considered most important in those days.
