Re: Reliable navigation coordinates of stars

Should an almanac provide the coordinates of the center of light of the pair? Or the center of mass? Or just the coordinates of the brighter star, alpha Centauri A? There are no absolute answers here.

    Late comment indeed ...

Regarding double / multiple Navigation Stars, we observe that the maximum geocentric angular distance between center of light and center of gravity - or even center of the brightest component and any of the just previously mentioned "centers" - never exceeds 6 arc seconds.

We can accordingly accommodate any of these at will and round off then publish any of them in a Nautical Almanac (NAL) since the resulting actual "operational" end result NAL accuracy - i.e. through the required extra GAST computation - is +/- 6 arc seconds, give or take.

So this is one other interesting example where the CelNav 6" accuracy limit can easily accommodate all Navigational multiple stars, just as it can also easily accommodate ignoring the Moon Limb irregular mountain irregularities in the Lunar sights.

Happy New Year 2025 to y'all

    Kermit
