I brought my Hughes mates sextant home yesterday in order to photograph the receipts I told of in my previous post. It just shows the frailty of human memory. There were two receipts not one, and the shop was in Liverpool not Cardiff.
Just to surprise you when you get the bill for your re-silvered horizon mirror, you’ll see that the cost in 1956 to the Third Officer of the SS City of Bristol for a new index mirror including fitting and adjustment was one pound, seventeen shillings and sixpence.
By 1962, he’d been promoted to second officer of the SS City of London, which was just as well, because the cost of overhauling including re-silvering the horizon mirror had risen to a mighty eight pounds, seventeen shillings and sixpence.
