As you noted at the end, fortunately no loss of life, that being the paramount consideration, I should think.
As to the status of the ships navigational systems/devices, it sounded to me as if they weren't operating. I might well have misunderstood stated data, entirely possible, given the limits of my background, with regard to navigation.
What was it that Murphy said, something to the effect that "anything that can go wrong will".
