I would not leave shore without my hockey puck, and IMHO the Mini 2000
is the best of the lot. If memory serves at the time I purchased mine
Celestaire carried two hockey puck compasses. I was fortunate enough to
chat with Ken in Celestaire's booth at a Chicago's Strictly Sail show,
and the Mini 2000 was his recommendation. I bought it on the spot and
    have never looked back.

I've used it along with a sextant 17 miles off Chicago. In one set I
used the horizontal angle between 2 skyscrapers determined with the
sextant and a bearing to one from the compass. In another I used
vertical height above the horizon with a modified refraction value along
with a compass bearing. The results compared to GPS position were so
good it was almost scary. In one set I used height above horizon and a
bearing (true) from the GPS, and it was worse than the compass
observations; perhaps because the GPS is limited to 1 degree resolution
and on a good day the hockey puck can do better than that.
