    As sad as it is, I can see this happening on a ship or rig. I've seen examples of this first hand during the recent years of my post sea going career in my present teaching career. What I fear is that we have a generation of mariners that don't navigate with their mind, and don't have a lot of practice on basic ( or advanced) ship handling due to DP. I don't think stupidity would be the term, but not following the basics and using all forms of navigation and "experience " would be a better term used. If one followed blindly a GPS position ( and case studies have shown some have), indeed one could drive right up on a beach ( as some case histories have shown).

    Such a shame when there are in most cases indications to be viewed no father that out the window indicating the navigation error….

    I've said if before, but sadly what I see in my basic nav and celestial classes are students that simply want to gain a passing grade and pass the USCG test. Few really have a desire or interest in ocean navigation as myself and some of my peers did and still do.
