Thanks for your input. Obviously, you are more familiar with the metric system than I however for what it's worth, the spec. on the Empire Torpedo Level I used, according to the maker is as follows. "accurate to within .0005'/'. I don't off hand know how this would relate to what you mentioned, 1mm/m (.040'/39.375')however the 3.5' of arc correct?? that you mentioned is on the "loose" side, or it sounds that way to me.
It is entirely possible that I was having a bad day with my sextant, I will try some more. Who knows, but I might be able to get this thing to work. Using a Davis Artificial Horizon, shooting in essentially the same location, working against GPS coordinates, my calculated fix, AM and PM sun shots, separated by 4 - 5 hours, are pretty consistently within 2 NM of GPS coordinates, not great, but reasonable, I think.
I understand that Rome Wasn't built in a day either.
