Using the referenced Empire Torpedo Level,I would level my mirror assembly, the level placed on the mirror, horizontally, then vertically. Having done this,I would run the checks a second time. I believe I might have reversed the level too, not certain though.
Re your comment about "returning results around 2nm", that would certainly be acceptable, possibly not great, but certainly acceptable to me. Unfortunately, looking at one sight reduction I plotted on a USPS CLS Plotting Sheet, my "fix" is 31+ miles from GPS coordinates, almost off the sheet, which covers 1 degree x one degree.
I might well have gotten really sloppy with my sextant, don't think so though. Obviously, something is badly amiss. Will try again when I'm feeling better.
