I once (only once) skippered a yacht from the Canaries to the Windies. Total electrics failure.

For about six glorious days, the required wing-on-wing tradewinds heading coincided with Reed's Almanac derived (page 146) Sunset bearing (amplitude) half a diameter above the horizon.

True heading sorted. No riddle of the secant.
