So, we are asked to believe that the ranking bridge officer and helmsman was a
junior officer who was incompetent to have the helm and unfamiliar with the
autopilot operations? And that's supposed to be reassuring? Hmmmm.....
Oddly enough tonight PBS ran an hour on the Andrea Dorea and the Stockholm, and
their conclusion (not "PBS's" but also that of a professor at the USMMA who had
researched this) is that the official findings at the time were a fast cover-up
by Lloyds', who insured both ships and wanted a fast cheap end to the matter,
blaming the Dorea's captain when the only facts indicate exactly the opposite,
that the Stockholm was totally responsible but all parties wanted to cover this
up--except the Italians, who got out-politicked.
"The ship is safe, there's nothing wrong with the mechanisms, we simply left an
incompetent in charge on the bridge."
OK, I'm reassured. (Not!)
They say the Stockholm is still in service doing Carribean cruises someplace.
