I like the advice given in the original patent to use the star finder to preset the sextant and lining it up over the pelorus to to spot the star while the sky is still bright, the star not yet visible to the naked eye, and the horizon clearly illuminated which provides more time for sights and for more accurate sights since the horizon is clearer.
