When setting up the star finder, or HO 249 Vol 1, for evening stars, it may be found helpful to use LHA Aries corresponding to Civil rather than Nautical Twilight, as is sometimes suggested. This will extend the availability of a firm sea horizon, with brighter stars in the eastern sky often visible in the sextant's pre-set field of view, if not with the naked eye.
Nautical Twilight is a better starting point in the morning. Hope this isn't stating the blindingly obvious!
