In flight navigation you rarely get a celestial fix so you are usually limited to one LOP during the day. So the method is to analyse each LOP as either a "speed line" or a "course line." If the sun is out by your wingtip the resulting LOP will be parallel to your course so the intercept will tell you if you are on course or how far off course you are and which way to get back on course. A shot ahead tells how far you have come, the distace to go, and, by computation, your actual ground speed. The landfall procedure requires that youi arange to get on to a "course line" LOP to ensure that you find your island.
