Hanno and I met twice for coffee at Caroline's Cafe near the Scripp's pier in La Jolla. It was at the time he had developed his azimuth graph and he gave me a laminated copy of it. Along with Gary's Bygrave it holds a place of honor in my celestial bookcase.
In 1956-57 I spent the academic year at Ludwig Maximilian Universität in Munich, and he was a rare opportunity for me to inflict my German on a native speaker. He bore it with good grace and was kind enough to say my accent was excellent. But my technical vocabulary was not up to the topic, so we quickly went to English.
Those two afternoons he was both earnest and jovial. I liked him immensely and sure will miss his presence among us.

Another great contributer to the NavList has left us.Perhaps Hanno can now continue his discussions with George Huxtable - or even Captain Cook.Who knows ??????HenryOn Mon, Sep 14, 2015 at 1:02 AM, Francis Upchurch <NoReply_Upchurch@fer3.com> wrote:I was very sorry to hear about Hanno,
I never met him personally, but we had a friendly and very interesting email correspondence in recent years.
He helped me a lot with the maths and also useful advice on engineering homemade instruments like slide rules.
In fact, he was so helpful, I sent him one of my homemade Fuller 2 cylindrical slide rules a few months ago. I hope he had some fun with it.
He told me a bit about his recent trip to New Zealand which apparently had been a long term ambition, so I am glad he did that. (It is still on my bucket list)
I hope we can keep his correspondance on line? I would cetainly like to refer to some of his earlier posts.
Best wishes
