    David,

    Don't overthink.  You do not draw untill your AP is close, say 60 - 80 miles away.  If you have an intercept of  11 D. then just eyeball the azimuth and come up with a new AP.  Say the azimuth was 300 degrees true then the new AP would be ABOUT 10 degrees west and ABOUT 2 degrees north.  Use this new point as your new AP.  Usually, on the third AP the intercept will be normal ( less than 60 NM ) so, then, draw your intercept.
