When he first takes the sextant out of the box, he examines it upside-down (arc up). This is actually quite common for some reason among absolute beginners. Looking at the photos, I finally noticed something that was bugging me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it previously. He seemed "uncomfortable" looking through the sextant's scope. Now I see it. He's trying to look with his left eye, which is cumbersome with a sextant. Modern sextants are best suited to left-handed, right-eye-dominant users. I find that quite a few beginners do this, too, unless I actively tell them not to. How would you know otherwise?
