I don't know in general. In my case, my interest in navigation is connected with the appeal of self-reliance. And I've never been pleased with any topic where I can't see the evidence myself and follow the reasoning that leads to the conclusions. If somebody tells me "sea level is rising dramatically... it's already started... the computer models are proved right", I feel compelled to turn to the tide gauge data. If the most basic ground data does not match the claim, then count me "unconvinced at present", but open to more evidence.
