    Robert-
"But when all is said and done, the enormous rate of oil consumption
throughout the world does not bode well for a civilization that intends to
rely upon it for the long term."

There's no problem, really. The oil sands in Canada are being mined quite
profitably right now with production scheduled to expand. And the US is sitting
on enough coal to replace a 400-year supply of oil. All of this can be done
"now" at current market prices, and by the time gasoline reaches $4-5/gallon in
the US, it becomes totally profitable to manufacture petroleum products from
coal and oil--the same way Hitler ran the German war machine. And, incidentally,
to manufacture light sweet crude from trash sources, there's a major pilot
operation online in the US as well. European gas prices could be brought down to
the the "low" US prices today--literally--but most EU nations prefer a 100% tax
on fuels, to fund mass transit operations and other options. (Like the French
    rail system.)

The Chinese have also dusted off "obsolete" nuclear technology and are scaling
it up big time, I'm told they may become world leaders in it. They're not going
to let world petroleum suppliers dominate them in the long term. I think the
term is "pebble bed" reactors, quite interesting what they're doing, and able to
be scaled up in multiple units very nicely.

Oil consumption? No real problem, it is the same "wealth" problem that affects
everything in the world including food and water and basic healthcare.
