I greatly enjoyed your comments Roger. I have Jeff Toghill's book, and may others, in a box somewhere. I have collected a great many books on navigation over the years.
One of your comments got me thinking. You say that you are 49' ASL and, if I interpret what you have said correctly, you determined that by reverse engineering your position lines to determine what adjustment for height of eye which place your (average) position lines across your known postion. Is that correct?
So it appears you are sighting from a spot on land with a clear view of the sea horizon. Is that right?
If so, are you close enough to the beach to use your sextant to measure a vertical angle from the waterline (ignoring tides) to the point where you take your sights? That would be another fun application.
