Re the Astra IIIB, I believe that they are used by the Merchant Marine Academy in the U.S., which I would think speaks well for them. I take it that you are located in the U.K., and I have no idea as to what an Astra IIIB would cost there, and the price of the Astras has gone up since I purchased mine, which has never gone to sea, and likely never will, as I'm a "landlocked navigator", don't have a boat of my own and the few times I've been out on sail boats I've gotten sea sick. At the time I purchased my Astra, Plath and Tamara instruments were going for about 3 plus times what I paid for the Astra. Whether they are that much better, I cannot say. Ultimately, one pays their money and chooses. Best of luck whichever way you go.
