Thanks for help from Alex Eremenko in translating parts of the handbook for the Russian IMS 3 octant. The fluid used in this aircraft octant was definitely refined ethyl alchohol (the same sort of alcohol that is used as a social lubricant). As it is clearly derived from the Plath SOLD octant, the latter almost certainly used alcohol too. I will try to post instructions and pictures to describe how to remove the bubble assembly and refill it on my blog (www.sextantbook.com) sometime in the next few days.
