The evident confusion is, perhaps partly my fault. Allow me to rephrase.
With the Davis AH, I see without the sextant, a sun reflected in the water dish. Picking up the sextant, I swing the arc until I see the sextant sun. I move the index arm until the lower limb of the sextant sun is tangent to the upper limb of the sun seen in the water dish, ending up with a lower limb shot.
With the mirror horizon, same routine, except that I start with the sun seen in the mirror. Words can be a problem.
