Graham, as Greg aptly observed racing sailors are a sly lot.
I spent my teens racing in a one- design class (Lightnings) on Long Island Sound. A basic principle is to 'stay between your competition and the next mark.' So when your main competitor tacks, so do you. Often leads to more tacks than optimal to reach the mark.
