Reading the AWU-1/A mil spec that is posted on line it appears that this sextant was in fact intended for an aircraft that was to fly at high altitude. I'm thinking this may have been intended for one of the Navy's jet powered seaplanes, such as the Martin P6M Seamaster, which was canceled in 1959.
