    I would say they’re using these https://www.trinitymarine.co.uk/shop/a-royal-navy-sextant-by-henry-hughes-son-unpolished-brass-scale/  .  At least one shade appears to be in.  They appear to be measuring about 45 degrees.  They would have been many miles away, so by the time the cloud got to that height the glow wouldn’t have been quite so bright.  See Operation ‘Grapple’ https://nuclearweaponarchive.org/Uk/UKTesting.html .  Also https://film.iwmcollections.org.uk/record/1181 .  Yes, in 1958 people really did speak like that.  DaveP
