Robin Stuart, you sent photographs of sextant stands at Greenwich and Oxford.  That’s a nice comparison Robin.  But the Oxford photograph adds further questions.  What are the special attributes of Troughton double frames.  Did Troughton simply wish to work with brass sheet and avoid the casting process, or are there technical advantages with double frames?  Also, why the jaunty downwards display angle?  Was it just the artistic temperament of the display organiser, or was it, with a photograph of Scott in the background, a suggestion that the method might have been used with an artificial horizon in Antarctic latitudes?  DaveP
