Sextant Stand

I visited the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, UK recently and was intrigued by the object shown in the first image. It was described simply as a "Sextant Stand about 1901" but it wasn't obvious how it would have been used. The following day at the Museum of Science History in Oxford I found a stand with a sextant actually mounted on it which helped to clarified things.
