As I understand it, someone figured out that turpentine is "pine tree juice"
and that something in citrus rinds is, well, similar to turpentine. And it turns
out to work very nicely.
If that seems odd, or puts you off fresh oranges, consider that apple seeds
contain a significant amount of cyanide. Plants normally carry all sorts of
toxins, why not paint thinner? Even our old friend "shellac" is literally the
"shell" of the "lac" beetle. Mixed in lacquer thinner, of course.
