As to a compass, in 1977 I was leaving New Orleans after attending a tax conference.
In my briefcase I had a lensmatic compass in a brass case.
What's that I was asked? A compass! A blank expression!
I slowly turned it around until the needle was aligned with North, and pointed out to the agent: that's the direction to where Santa Claus lives.
Waved through.
